This is the most depressing article I've read in a long time. Although it does end on note of hope...

And sort of related, from The Toast:

I don't have a great attachment to Spock, so I've not really felt qualified to share in the outpouring of sadness. (Grew up far away, and without a TV...)

But this is too lovely not to share. With thanks to shadowkat67.

Leonard Nimoy's Advice To A Biracial Girl In 1968

BuzzFeed's Leonora Epstein uncovered this blog post from the blog My Star Trek Scrapbook, which features a letter from a 1968 issue of the defunct teen magazine FaVE! In a letter addressed to Mr. Spock, a young biracial girl laments that she doesn't fit in with either her black or her white peers.

"I know that you are half Vulcan and half human and you have suffered because of this," the girl named F.C. wrote. "My mother is Negro and my father is white and I am told this makes me a half-breed. ... I guess I'll never have any friends."

Nimoy was so moved by the letter that he responded at length in the next issue. "[Spock] said to himself: 'Not everyone will like me,' " Nimoy wrote. "But there will be those who will accept me just for who I am."

Go read the whole thing.

Two interesting articles about Fifty Shades of Grey:

Consent Isn’t Enough: The Troubling Sex of Fifty Shades. The blockbuster fantasy has become a big movie—and a bigger problem.
By Emma Green, for The Atlantic.

Sex, Lies and Fifty Shades. Millions have read the books. Millions more will see the movie. And everything you think you know about it—and women—is wrong.
By Leslie Bennetts for Entertainment Weekly.

ETA: And via shadowkat67:

'Fifty Shades of Grey' Review - The New Yorker. No pain, No Gain.

This is the beginning:

If the figures are correct, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” by E. L. James, has been bought by more than a hundred million people, of whom only twenty million were under the impression that it was a paint catalogue. That leaves a solid eighty million or so who, upon reading sentences such as “He strokes his chin thoughtfully with his long, skilled fingers,” had to lie down for a while and let the creamy waves of ecstasy subside. Now, after an enticing buildup, which took to extreme lengths the art of the peekaboo, the film of the book is here.

Video under cut due to size. But watch it.Collapse )

First caught this on TV a few weeks ago, during an ad break, wondering what it was - especially as it was longer than a normal advert... And then it turned out to be simply 'Wimmins R Awesome! Go Do Sport & don't worry about what people think!'

I am very pleased, it's an excellent campaign:

This Girl Can celebrates the women who are doing their thing no matter how they do it, how they look or even how sweaty they get. They’re here to inspire us to wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgement is a barrier that can be overcome. #thisgirlcan

Via gillo (here) this simply made my day. RTD and Moffat are honestly the bestest/most geekiest/fannish showrunners ever. And this proves it. ♥

It all started in DWM 482 when a fan wrote in to ask whether the Doctor was a bigamist, since he was obviously married back on Gallifrey, but has since married Elizabeth I, Marilyn Monroe and River Song. And since it's a show about time-travel, he could easily travel back to when any/all of them were still alive... For the full reply (which is worth reading!!!) go here, but for now the important thing is that in his response Moffat claimed that the Doctor's marriage to Liz I could have been annulled as it was never consummated. RTD took issue with this:

"I love your list in DWM 482 of the Doctor’s many wives. Did you ever think we’d be having that conversation, 10 years ago? But… what’s this? His marriage to Queen Elizabeth the First was unconsummated? But, but, but… in The End of Time Part One, the Tenth Doctor arrives on the Ood-Sphere to greet his old friend Ood Sigma with the words, “Got married. That was a mistake. Good Queen Bess. And let me tell you, her nickname is no longer… ahem.” So, what does that mean, boss? What can it possibly mean?? Steve, what does it MEAN??? Thank you."

Moffat's replyCollapse )

I know I've not been around much... Well, I've been reading my flist, but not really posting. Mostly I'm blaming January being January. I just want hibernate. Also I know I should be working on my 'Last Christmas' meta, except my brain has shut down completely and isn't co-operating. (I rewatched it, and it's a beautiful, wonderful, episode, I just can't get my head booted into whatever gear it needs to be in.)

Instead I'm working on something that's pretty much original fic - it's attached to my Alex 'verse by a thread, but you would not need to know anything about it (or even Doctor Who) to read it. It's about a boy called George and is basically a coming-out story. Still very much a WIP, but might try to start posting when I've pulled things together a little more.

In other news my parents are arriving this evening, so I have spent ALL DAY tidying/cleaning, and it's paying off nicely. But I shall be even more scarce next week.

kerkevik_2014 pointed me towards this vidder (maidavids on LJ). Have only checked out a couple of vids so far, but they look very nice.

Am also feeling a bit... morose? Melancholy? The Dish is closing down. I first found it in 2008, in the run-up to Obama's election, and it's been my go-to place for US politics/general news/thoughts on everything and anything. It'll leave a huge gap in my online life.

OK, must go continue cleaning, even though I'm sure there was something else I was going to say. Oh yes, meme (via my flist):

Ask me a question about one of my fics. It can be absolutely anything in any project and I will answer it the best I can -- even on current progress/plans.

If you'd prefer, you can also ask about my writing for a particular fandom, my writing as a whole, etc.

Not sure when I'd get time to reply, but will certainly do my best! :)

Under the cut two performers that really stood out. Especially the first one. I wanted him to just keep singing, so I could keep listening to his voice...

(The second one became very funny once he had finished singing and everyone had turned around, as Rita Ora declared she couldn't look at him, he was too handsome. *g*)

First of all many thanks to zanthinegirl and green_maia (I loved your little ps! <3) for the lovely Christmas cards, which I have been forgetting to mention! It always get ridiculously excited about post from abroad.

And then luckweaver got me a truly amazing present - a Clara moodtheme!!! It took a good few days to find all the caps - not to mention getting it to work (photobucket has been blacklisted forever!), but now it is here, and amazing, and I get to look at Clara's FACE every day!!! Also changed my banner/colors etc.)

So right now I feel like this (although I don't think luckweaver is as grumpy as Mitchell *g*):

And with this I will wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! ♥ Thank you all for 2014 and hope you all have a wonderful 2015!

my thoughts echoed

About The Wedding of River Song:
"Eleven, in the very episode that's about killing off the Lonely God once and for all, meets River when she is Waters of Mars Ten. He's just decided to lay this part of himself to rest, and there's the Timelord Victorious standing right in front of him--and he doesn't run away, or shove her in a cupboard, or try to kill her, or "give her a choice" to make himself feel better about killing her... he marries her. He loves her and accepts her and that's how he gets her to stop."
10littlebullets

"If someone is there for you, is asking nothing of you and has loved you faithfully and unconditionally for all those years and if that person is the one that you turn to for comfort and support when you are at your most vulnerable, and if they give you that comfort and support unconditionally asking nothing in return, then whether you acknowledge it or not, that is love, so yes Buffy loved Spike."
(Jane Espenson?)

The Doctor (to River): "Please. Help me."

About Chosen:
"Even if we hadn’t seen Buffy’s face shining in the most perfect, absolute expression of love in that final scene – didn’t everything that Buffy and Spike were to each other already tell us very, very clearly that they loved each other? And if you don’t see that – didn’t already see that, long before this scene – then, goodness, we’re not watching the same show."
the_royal_anna

Mr Lux: "And who is the Doctor?"
River: "The only story you'll ever tell - if you survive him."
'Forest of the Dead'

“The Angel and Spike relationship has this mythic feel... David and James know how to play everything like they hate each other, but there is this weird underlying love, and I can't write that... I just love Spike so much and think he is the best character ever. He is just a writer's dream. Spike is the outsider there to deconstruct all the heroes because he doesn't play along, yet he is one, but he would never admit it. I think we are proud he became part of the AtS universe without acting like he was part of it.”
Drew Goddard

"Season six [of Buffy] remains the highlight. You won't find a more skilled extended exploration of existential turmoil on the big or small screen. And I'm not talking "woe is me" teenage angst, but a genuine search for what it means to be human. It's Bergman for the masses."
Tim Porter, Paste Magazine

Ianto: "I – know you get lonely."
Jack: "Going home wouldn't fix that. Being here, I've seen things I never dreamt I'd see. Loved people I never would have known if I'd just stayed where I was... And I wouldn't change that for the world."
'To The Last Man'

The Seventh Doctor: "I can hear the sound of empires toppling."
'The Happiness Patrol'

Messenger: "There is a woman who wants to meet you."
Doctor: That's nice, but I'm married."
The prequel to 'Asylum of the Daleks'
