'There’s a turn here, though, in which Doctor Who becomes a show that is about the pleasures of the text. It exists to be taken apart and read closely, so much so that there is almost no point at which the phrase “reading too much into things” applies. It is a show that is about reading extremely and perversely into things. When every single sentence can be as pregnant with meaning as this structure allows, what can “reading too much into things” even possibly mean? Moffat’s work, around this point, becomes strangely and wonderfully obsessed with testing the limits of what an episode of television can do. It is, in its own way, as fascinating and radical as Doctor Who has been since the Hartnell era.'

So I went to A&E this morning. And I've got to hand it to the NHS - I was in and out within the hour. Am impressed. (Good, friendly service too!)

Anyway, they did an x-ray of my foot, looked at it (the x-ray) and said I had a tiny fracture. The upshoot is that now I'm wearing one of these:

Mind you, it's a lot better than a pot! But my mobility is rather restricted. So, since I have TIME (and can't move easily) and also have Netflix - is there anything I MUST watch? (Or read, for that matter.)

Note: Am already reading GoT (have sort-of started book 4, am pacing myself now), and am not interested in watching the show. (Never say never, but the books are enough for me.)

Plans so far: An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Edge of Destruction. (I have these on DVD!) Also Press Gang. ETA: And House of Cards, which is on Netflix. Actually, that might be plenty for now...

And I just realised I never told you what happened...Collapse )

I posted some meta yesterday on the first three episodes of S8:

Assorted meta (Deep Breath, Into the Dalek, Robot of Sherwood)

(In case you missed it - which is my own fault for posting on a Sunday evening. *g*)

Also, am still chuckling over this summary of Listen (by crystalsoulslayer on Tumblr):

Listen is basically the Doctor getting himself all worked up in the middle of the night and making Clara come check the closet for monsters.

As I hurt my foot rather badly Saturday morning, and thus had to sit still with my foot up, I finally bring you Doctor Who thoughts… Scattered and incomplete, but better than nothing hopefully. Pretty much written in one go, so apologies for being somewhat unpolished.

(‘Listen’ will be dealt with in a separate post. ETA: Possible spoilers [for Listen] in the comments, but none in the post itself.)

From Steven Moffat Appreciation on Tumblr: Some Random Amateur’s Guide to Overthinking Doctor Who. (Thoughts on how to get the most out of Moffat Who.)

And such_heights wrote this very interesting thing:

One Of My Hobbies: companions and life outside the Doctor.
('So there's an interesting post on tumblr from taiey pointing out just how many of Clara's episodes feature her home/work life as well as her adventures with the Doctor - she tallies it as 75% up to last week's episode. That seems pretty high! And then I was curious what it looked like for other companions, as well as the time periods spent travelling full time in the TARDIS versus coming along for visits etc.)

Beautiful new Clara banner (and matching icon) made for me by the very talented the_redjay. Not quite sure about the layout colours yet, but I've decided to leave the fiddling for now.

That was fabulous and wonderful.

Am really, really hoping I'll get time to write some meta this week, because I've actually got thoughts. (About Twelve generally.) But for now - I just wanted to say that that was FUN! :D

“I always worry about responding to it at all, because I then sound desperately defensive and weird if I list all the very strong women that we’ve imported into Sherlock that weren’t even in the original, or the number of times I have the Doctor saved by the women in his life. I just think I sound like a defensive idiot if I do that.
So, what can I say? I think it’s important that there is a feminist critique of television because things that go unquestioned go unchanged and what goes unchanged becomes institutionalized and what becomes institutionalized becomes your fault. So, it should be questioned.
I think some of the criticisms that are aimed at me personally are absurdly over the top and unfair, but then, who said the prosecution has to be fair? And it’s a case that needs to be prosecuted. When it’s personalized insults that my kids can see, that’s pretty bad. That’s bad form, I’d say, and it’s not the way you conduct a reasoned argument. But, as I say, who says the prosecution has to be fair?” —
Moffat (x)

Look, it's the last chapter! (Well, there's an epilogue.) But! I finished it.

Dunno if anyone will actually read, what with Doctor Who being back on our screens and all that, but if I wait until S8 is finished no one will remember what was happening here. So... Enjoy!

..about Deep Breath.

But these few weeks are literally the worst out of the whole year at work. (Worked 11 1/2 hours yesterday. That's not typical, but every day is busy and stressful.) So I promise I *will* write, when I have found some time and energy, and managed to collect my thoughts. There's plenty there, but I am still at the 'fire bad, tree pretty' stage. (That's not a spoiler, but a Buffy quote.)

Although if you're curious, then my reactions mirrored Clara's almost exactly.

I like this interview with Jenna Coleman.

(Spoilers for Clara's storyline. Not big enough for me to mind them, but thought I'd better point it out.)

Many, many thanks to whoever nominated the following of my works for the wicked_awards.

Fic:

Title: Mr Broody and The Vengeance Demon or The Ship That Never Sailed
Fandom/Pairing: AtS, BtVS; Angel/Anya
Categories: I've Got You Under My Skin(best het)

Title: She Can Be. She Will Be. (AO3) (On LJ here.)
Fandom/Pairing: Doctor Who; 11th/River Song
Categories: Partners in Crime(best het)

Meta:

Title: 'Apocalypses on BtVS' or 'Why Buffy smiled'
Fandom/Pairing: BtVS
Categories: Not Fade Away(best essay/meta)

(Slightly puzzled by the first one, if I'm honest. 'She Can Be. She Will Be.' is one of the fics I am most proud of, ever, but the Angel/Anya one was just written for fun. And is in dire need of editing... It's so old. BUT. I am very very grateful, and surprised. Thank you again, mysterious benefactor(s)! ♥)

my thoughts echoed

About The Wedding of River Song:
"Eleven, in the very episode that's about killing off the Lonely God once and for all, meets River when she is Waters of Mars Ten. He's just decided to lay this part of himself to rest, and there's the Timelord Victorious standing right in front of him--and he doesn't run away, or shove her in a cupboard, or try to kill her, or "give her a choice" to make himself feel better about killing her... he marries her. He loves her and accepts her and that's how he gets her to stop."
10littlebullets

"If someone is there for you, is asking nothing of you and has loved you faithfully and unconditionally for all those years and if that person is the one that you turn to for comfort and support when you are at your most vulnerable, and if they give you that comfort and support unconditionally asking nothing in return, then whether you acknowledge it or not, that is love, so yes Buffy loved Spike."
(Jane Espenson?)

The Doctor (to River): "Please. Help me."

About Chosen:
"Even if we hadn’t seen Buffy’s face shining in the most perfect, absolute expression of love in that final scene – didn’t everything that Buffy and Spike were to each other already tell us very, very clearly that they loved each other? And if you don’t see that – didn’t already see that, long before this scene – then, goodness, we’re not watching the same show."
the_royal_anna

Mr Lux: "And who is the Doctor?"
River: "The only story you'll ever tell - if you survive him."
'Forest of the Dead'

“The Angel and Spike relationship has this mythic feel... David and James know how to play everything like they hate each other, but there is this weird underlying love, and I can't write that... I just love Spike so much and think he is the best character ever. He is just a writer's dream. Spike is the outsider there to deconstruct all the heroes because he doesn't play along, yet he is one, but he would never admit it. I think we are proud he became part of the AtS universe without acting like he was part of it.”
Drew Goddard

"Season six [of Buffy] remains the highlight. You won't find a more skilled extended exploration of existential turmoil on the big or small screen. And I'm not talking "woe is me" teenage angst, but a genuine search for what it means to be human. It's Bergman for the masses."
Tim Porter, Paste Magazine

Ianto: "I – know you get lonely."
Jack: "Going home wouldn't fix that. Being here, I've seen things I never dreamt I'd see. Loved people I never would have known if I'd just stayed where I was... And I wouldn't change that for the world."
'To The Last Man'

The Seventh Doctor: "I can hear the sound of empires toppling."
'The Happiness Patrol'

Messenger: "There is a woman who wants to meet you."
Doctor: That's nice, but I'm married."
The prequel to 'Asylum of the Daleks'
